Knight
The Knight class is a classic Final Fantasy job class, and for good reason. Knights are among the most powerful job classes in the game and are available very early in the game. They are powerful fighters, with innate bonuses in strength and in HP, which is further augmented by the ability to equip heavy armor. Knights also have a good set of Battle Skills that are worth acquiring. However, Knights also have decent magic power, unlike other jobs along the warrior pathway. For this reason, magic is a good secondary ability to give to a Knight.
In battle, Knights are great attackers that belong on your front line. Due to their high power and HP totals, you'll want to have at least one Knight in your party throughout the first two chapters. I found their break attacks to be a great secondary action ability, so try to advance your fighters far enough in this job class to pick up a decent amount of break attacks for later use. Also, if you are having problems with a certain battle, you may want to turn the majority of your party into Knights for their high HP total and for their power so that you can pound those enemies into the ground!

Against magic using enemies |
The Knight's set of Battle Skills is a great skill set to use. It allows you to break the equipment and attributes of enemy troops. Breaking the equipment of an enemy is a great way to hamper them on the battlefield and make your life easier. The best of these skills are Weapon Break and Armor Break. If you break a character's equipped weapon, their strength is sapped and their attacks will be virtually useless. For this reason, buy Weapon Break as soon as you can and put it to use against other Knights and powerful enemies. It is also useful against characters like Vormav and Rofel, who have devastating sword attacks. If they can't use these attacks, you can gain an immediate advantage over them. Armor Break is almost as useful, as breaking armor is a great way to cut a character's defenses and HP. Breaking equipment is better than attacking in many respects because HP loss from attacks can be healed, but if a character loses armor that provides a HP bonus of around 100 HP, they lose that HP forever. These skills are great on the battlefield in any situation. Head Break works well for quick depletion of HP and usually has a higher success rate than armor break. Of the four equipment breaks, Shield Break is the worst. It is normally a waste of time, except in situations where you want to break or steal a weapon from your enemy; for some enemies, their shield must be destroyed before you can get to their weapon. The one drawback to these attacks is that they can be easily avoided if the enemy equips the Maintenance support skill.
The other break attacks focus on ruining the target's power. Of these four skills, Speed Break is the best for beating down opponents. If you are trying to prolong a battle in order to gain JP or trying to take out a tough enemy quickly, this is a good choice because it can render your opponent helpless, as he or she will have to keep waiting for a turn and a chance to attack you. Power and Mind Break are also helpful in making enemies helpless, as you can reduce damage from their attacks and spells to almost nothing through use of these skills. I never really used Magic Break on my enemies, so I wouldn't really recommend getting that before the others.
The Battle Skill set is a worthy secondary skill set while training a character in any job class, especially one where you use long range weapons. You can give this skill set to a Mediator or Archer and watch them break things with their weapon from afar without fear of retaliation, or you can stick it on a Lancer or Samurai and break equipment from up close. The long range possibilities are the one advantage of breaking equipment over stealing it, which is more rewarding, but must be done from up close. The break skills come in handy throughout the game, so you may want to have it available at all times. (Or at least until you pick up Orlandu and Meliadoul)

The Knight's Weapon Guard Skill is a great reaction ability to use in the early stages of the game for several reasons. First of all, it is one of the cheapest reaction skills in the game, with a cost of only 200 JP, making it an affordable skill during Chapter 1. Another reason to buy this is that it is triggered by any physical attack and will often prevent all damage. For these reasons, I recommend buying this skill as soon as you can and giving it to the majority of your party during the first two chapters, but changing to a skill like Auto Potion or Blade Grasp during Chapter 3.

For special characters like Agrias and Orlandu, as well as for weaker fighters |
The Knight's support abilities allow characters to equip the heavy equipment of the Knight. Equip Armor allows any character to equip the heavy protective armor used by Knights. This ability can be very important in keeping characters such as Bards, Calculators, and Summoners, who have high HP handicaps, alive on the battlefield. If you notice a character getting pounded on the battlefield and killed easily, this might be a good support skill to equip. It also helps classes like Monks and Ninjas, allowing them to wreak devastation with their special skills and abilities, while giving them the HP needed to fight on the front line and live through damaging enemy attacks. Equip Shield is a skill that I never found to be very useful. I'd much rather be able to equip a powerful weapon or heavy armor than a shield, so I wouldn't even bother with this one. Equip Sword is another powerful support skill that can make all the difference in the world during battle. If you want your weaker classes, such as Priests, Thieves, and Summoners to fight with the big boys, this is the skill to pick. It is also the best support ability to give to a character such as Agrias, Orlandu, Beowulf, Meliadoul, or Cloud, because it will allow them to use their special sword skills while they are training in a class that does not allow you to use a sword. Make it a priority to buy these guys this skill!
The Knight has no special movement abilities. |
